THE PREMIER AT HAMMER.
LAND FOR OLOSE SETTLEMENT. SUBSIDISED CANADIAN LINE. THE HEBRIDES. Per Press Association. Christchurch, March 9. In his speech at Hanmer the Premier, dealing with the Government's land policy, said he desired to say to tha people of Canterbury, Otagu, Hawke's Biy, and Waikato, tnat some of the large landowners must give way to close settlement, for tha country must hava population. He said also that whea at Home the question of a bubaidised Canadian line had been discussed, and New ZajlaEd's prospective amount would be .£20,000. but at the same time he had no intention of doing away with the 'Frisco service. As a mail service the Government could not improve upon it, but there must be an extension so as to j connect and havu a federal service. He thought the Imperial Government ought to acquire the French rights in the Hebrides, and let the Islands be a British colony.
