CRICKET.
VICTORIA V. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. PER PEES 3 ASSOCIATION, Adklaide, March 5. Giffen played a fine inuicgs, much in his old form, though he gave a couple of chances. Olaxton 29 and Travers 41 were the only others to mak* a stand. Saunders toek e'ght wickets for 106, and did the hat trick. ENGLISHMEN T. NEW ZEALAND. I Wellington, March 5. Weather conditions were perftci when play was resumed this Morning. The wicket appeared to be none the worse from yesterday's play. It was anticipated the visitors would register anything between 350 and 450 runs on a wicket which in thbir opening would phy fairly true. They kept New Zealanders in the fi-ld till just on 5 p.m., their record at the liso wickot being 380 or 106 in advance of the Colonials score. Warner who pUytd a magnificent ch'.nceless innings got within 23 of Reese's big score of the previous day hid splendidly timed off and on strokes being perfect and his forcible leg hifing aud admirable placing aroused the admiration of the crowd. Included in his tore were nineteen 4's.
Burnup shaped artistioally till his career was checked by leg before wicket, a d:cision which the New Zealjrid wicket-keeper admits was an incorrect one.
Fane's display was characterised by a certain measure of luck. Johnson who made his record score of tho tour infused plenty of vigour into bis play, several of his on strokes being capitally executed. Nevertheless be had plenty of luck and should have been sent to the right about on at least four occasions.
. Taylor made a few nice strokes and was going strongly whan Oallaway b<>at him with a beauty. Stanning showed stylish cricket for his contribution, his placing ard driving being neatly executed. The bowling honours fell to Onllaway, who got on a week spot at the Caledonian, and repeatedly stuck up the batsmeu. Richardson made a great mistake in not persevering with the Canterbury man in the morning. Fisber sent down a lot of 6hort pitched stuff. Upbam did not keep Lis u-ual accurate length, though he improved in th- later stages of the Englishmen's innings Before luucheon McCarthy trundled' capitally, repeatedly beating the batsman, but failing to hit the wickets; he lost his length when put on after the adjournment. Reese started well, and his trap laid for Johnson proved effectual in dismissing the tall Englishman. Tucker steadied run getting, though failing to find the timber of bis opponents.
The ground fielding of New Zealand was very elovenly, Lusk being a noted offender in this respect, but good work was done by Mahoney, Reese, and Tucker. Behind the wickets Williams was not seen at, his best, letting the ball pass bim with monotonous regularity. In 50 minutes left for play, the Colonials lost two good wickets. Judgrd by to-day's proceedings, the Englishmen should notch another easy victory.
The attendance was computed at about 2500, and .£96 was taken at the gatps. Yesterday's receipts amounted to XIB9. The scores are: -
