ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
»_— FKS PBESB ASSOCIATION. Dunbdin, February 23. Fredk. Ralph Payne, two yean of age, a son of Sir Payne, solicitor, fell over a bank at Bsllsknowes, and sustained injuries to which he succumbed. Thos. Redptth shot himself with a pea rife shortly after returning from church at Waitabuoa yesterday. He has been suffering from insomnia. Napier, February 23. An elderly man named McKee, living at dive, attempted to commit suicide this afternoon by cutting his throat with a razor. He his been in failing health for'a long time. It is not anticipated the injuries will prove serious. Invebcakgill, February 23. This morning a youth of 19, living in the suburbs, suddenly became insane, and hacked off the tips of three fingers. He then attacked his mother, threw her to the floor, and tried to Strang's her with bis maimed hand. The house is in a sparsely peopled locality, and when Sir Gray, second officer of the s.«. Herald, who was visiting his family while the ship was in port, got on the scene, matters looked ghastly. The youth showed superhuman strength, and, as it was some lime before assistance arrived, Mr Gr»y had a sharp struggle with him. Eventually the police and a doctor were got, the injured hand dressed, and tbe hd taken into custody. The mother, though much exhausted, was not irjurei.
