TERRIBLE CYCLONE AT THE ISLANDS.
PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. [ Auckland, February 18. Nows by the Ovalu gives particulars of the terrible cyclone which struck the low archipelago on January 13th, devastating the islands of Amamu, Haa, Ravehere, Marofcau, Takume, and Raroia, also doing great damage in other islands.
The eye'one also struck the Marquesas group, doing much damage, and on the island of Napo, a severe earthquake was felt. The i lands of Ravehere and Marokau werrf sw-pt completely, not a house remaning. Some 100 pejple their lives on Marokau, whilst at Takume a whole village was swept away, 15 persors being killed. A village settlement on Raroia had all tfce houses blown down, and was swept by the sea, 15 people losing thei'' lives.
In Bjw Island, one of the finest villages on the archipelago suffered terribly, every house being blown down by the gale, but fortunately only five live 3 were lost. The village of Avanu was devastated, five persons being killed.
The Mand of Hikiwea, carrying a population of 1000, suffered moS'. severely from the hurricane, having, apparently, felt the entire force of the C) cl >l e. The island, on which a village was established was swept, not a store or house remaining, and only a ftw ccc auut palms rebisted the btorm. Tha number lost on this island is abuut 400.
Grave fears are entertained as to the safe'y of several schooners in the group at the time, and up to February 7th no news bad been received of them at Papeete. Over 80 pearling cutters were lost at Hinekura.
Warships have been, sent from Pdp jete with provisions For the suffeiers.
The French authorities are taking steps to relieve distress.
