AUCKLAND MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.

PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, February 12. A special meeting of the Oity Council was he Id to-night to consider the financial position. The Mayor meved that the Finance Committee be instructed to confer with the city solicitor with a view to altering the incidence of taxation in such a way that the ordinary interest of the water loan shall be charged to the water account, thus enabling the special rate to bo reduced and the gensral rate correspondingly increased without adding to the total amount of rates paid. Tre Mayor said that the estimates showed tbat on the present rating basis they would go back over ,£4OOO next year, but the proposed alteration would provide nearly that sum for general purposes. The motion was carried. It was also resolved that the Town Clerk should ascertain the position of the Fire Brigade's Bill, and that a committee should interview the Premier on the subject.
