AN OPPOSITION PICNIC.

PBtt PRESS ISSOOUTIOK. Oartebtos, February IS. A c >mplim"titarypicnic was teniered to Mr W. E. Buchanan at Abiakouks, nsar Carterton, yesterday, in conmemoration of his return to Parliament as the Wairarapa representative for the s«v«nth time. The picnic was the biggest affair of the kind ever held in the valley. Capital weather prevailed, and the attendance was estimated at between 3000 and 5000. The scene en the grounds was one of great magnificence. In addition to Mr Buchanan, the following gues's were present: Mean J Aitken, M.H.R. (Wellington), J. Duthie, M.H.R. (Wellington), W. H. Fraser, M.H.R. (Likes Dietriot). Amongst the apologies received were those from Sir Wm. Russell, the Hon. T. Y. Duncan, O. H. Mills, J. MoGowan, W. Hall-Jome, Mr Atkinson, :ind the Premier. E oquent addressee were given by the members preseataod others. Ibportf of all descriptions were afterwards pro* c< e 'ed with. The toasts of Mr Buchanan's health and the Ptrliament t.f New Zealand were enthusiastically honoured. The refreshments and everything wera provided gratis, and the difficulties of catering for the multifarious requirement* were expeditiously and successfully overoome.
