OBITUARY.
* ■ ! MR EDWIN R. MORGAN. | Many old settlers along the coast as fir as Wangjnui will regret to hear of the death, after a long and piinful illness, of Mr Edwin Robert Morgan of the Kahui-road, Rahotu. The deceased gentleman was born in the town' of Gillingham, England, i ou the 14th June, 1843, and came to New Zealand in 1865, with two brothers wh- n ho farming at Brunswick I near Wacganui. In 1867 he and another brother to jk up a block of land on the Manawapiu River between Manutahi and Hawera, but wore driven off about Saptambsr 1868, by Titokowaru's rebel band which had just severely defeated Colonel McDonnell at Te Ngutu-o te-minu, after whioh the colonial troops retired to West mere taking the srttthrs with them. The settlers formed a number of defence corps and deceased was a sergeant in the Kii Iwi Volun'eer Cavalry, under L'eutenant, and la'er Captain, Bryce, afterwards the Hon. John Bryce, Defence Minister. While with this corps Mr Morgan s*w a good deal of service and was in a number of small engagements, being present at the fall of Nukumaru and Handly's wool-shed affair. After the war he resumed farming at Manu'ahi, remaining there till 1878, when he removed to Urenui, where he stayed till 1881, when he removed to Rahotu, where he his resided ever since, For many years Mr Morgan took a great interestin local politics, being a member and chairman-of the Patea Road Board for soma years. Daring the seventies he sat for some years as a member of the Taranaki County Council. He has also been a member of several other local bodies at various time*. For some yeii-8 he has held the position of clerk to the Farihaka Roid Board, and was at one time engineer to the wme body. He was also a valued member of the Rahotu School Committee. At the time of his death Mr Morgan wau in his 60 L h year. He leaves a family of five, two sons and three daughters, to mourn their loss. Mr Morgan was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him, and great sympathy will be felt for the family in the severe los 3 they have sustained. Suva, Jauuary 5. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.
