Tenders are to be called for caning stone to the crusher between Inglewood »nd New Plymouth. It was decided that timber be obtain ad for tho culvert near the Waitara Fac'my. The Waiwakaiho bridge is to b> repaired temporarily. Authority was given fir repairs to tho Stony River and one or t*o other bridges, but not any south of Puaihoroad. The engine driver reported that a new bell; wis required. —Authorised. The Foremen are to be instructed to look out in advance for places suitable for the crushing p'ant. The bridge drpenter's report was read. The Mangorei bridge, which is in a dangetous siate, is to be at',end«d to as soon as possible. The Engineer, Mr J Skinner, repotted as to punting bridges on the Junction-road. Tenders are to ba called for printing the Maketawa bridge with hematite, the bridge carpenter to draw up specifications. Tha Mangoraka and Waingona bridges a»e to be inspected and attended to. The chairman reported that at a meeting ef ratepayers in connexion with the proposed bridge loin held at Omata, the question of better grading of certain hills on the irnin road in the Riding hid been discussed, and the opinion was that it was time something should be dotio He moved that a petition be circulated smeng the ratepayers south of the Omata toligat', asking the Government to subsidise £ for £ any money raised by the ratep lyere for- cutting dewn and grading tho worst hills, the engineer's estimate being £41,000. The petition to set forth: (1) That a gre»t engineering error has been made in the laying off of the road before being handed ov.r to the 1 )c*l bodies; (2) that the whole of the traffic south of New Plymouth has ro oome over this road, and that many of the bills are of such a grade as to be dangerous; (3) that the settlers in thii portion of tha district do not in any way benefit by thelargeexp'mditure that the colooy has incurred upon railways, and are therefore entitled to special assistance; (4) that the county has for miny years spent ths whole f d rate, als? funds received from tolls, in keeping the road in repair, and cannot spend any of its funds in cutting down the hills. Members agreed that the Riding should have special cansideration fiom the Government. Mr McDonald ?eo raded the motion, which was carried. The Committee appointed to report on Mr. A. J. Mcintosh's application asking for compensation for half cost of filling in along his frontaga at Strsndon, Henui, reported that after inspecting the place they recommended that Mr Mcintosh be paid nothing by the Oouncil for the cost of filling in, as the part was not required by the Oouncil for the widening of the road, but they were in favour of the Council helping him to get resumption of the cxtn land that had been dedicated. A reselution in terms of the report was carried. The question of receiving a reply from the Colonial Secretary re validating expenditure in the portion of the Ptrihaka Riding now in the Eg own t County, was brought up. The Chairman said ro reply had been received from the Colonial Secretary. Several members urged that no mere money should be spent in the severed portion until the rxpenditure was validated. Finally it was decided to wire the Colonial Secretary on the subject and a message was {despatched accordingly. Mr Chambers waited on the Oouncil to explain the principle of a frio'ion hoist he had on hand suitable for raising stoae into the crush ir, including a supply service by m ans of t< uoks. He read an extract from a letter seat by the Minister to the Tauraaga Council to the effect that an alteration in the Kw would be made.
