The Daily News. FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 1902. FORWARD!

Is ths decisive n suit of (be poll taken on Wednesday on Ibe loan proposals means anythiig, it mi-ans a distinct command from the ratepayer* to the Borough Council to adopt a progressive policy in the mn u ier of public wmks. The mandate of the ratepayers—tbrs who have to pay—is forward. Toe mandate is so decisive, ii d-od imper.i tive, that the Mayor and Couacilloi s will do well to obey it without less of time. The burgesses of New Plymouth have patiently borne with the most vfxttious delays, Inve resisted every eflbit to induce them to displace the Mayor, or change the personal of the Council while the losn proposals for muUlwd by it were under consider atioa, and bow in the most emphatic manner, with an unanimity quite unprecedented, have clearly indicated their withes regarding the future. Wednesday's poll was, in addition to a direction as to the future policy to be l adopted, a direct vote of confidence in the Mayor and Councillors, and a signal defeat of their traducers. The Mayor and Councillors should be proud of possessing so fully the confidence of the ratepayers. For ourselves we feel that our unceasing advocacy of the loan proposals has met its reward by the block vote we asked for on tke morning of the poll being rec rdtd in such a decisive manner, if the council now acts up to its responsibilities, New Plymouth will become the most attractive town in the colony. New Plymouth is just now entering upon a psried of great prosperity and progress, and this loan bas come at a most opportune time, and will enable our public works to keep pace with private enterprise, now go evident on every hand. fhe hostility to New Plymouth, formerly so strong in tbe country districts, is now fortunately dying away as the value of the port to the farmer is being recognised. The growing disposition on the part of the people of New Plymouth to cater for the wants ef the inland district is also having a beneficial effect, and the growing inland towps are realising that instead of beiug looked upon as rivals, tbey are valued as important factors in the progress and prosperity of Taranaki. The poll on Wednesday marks ] an era in the history of New Plymouth, i but its influence will be felt all ov«r Taranaki.
