Final arrangements to establish uniform charges throughout Australia on cable me"sa<.-es sent from the Commonwealth to Europe have been completed by Mr Drak« and the Eastern Extension Gable Company. TVe rates on ordinary mtwagcg are fix>d at 2s 7d a word, and 5d Commonwtalth terminal rate, Government messiges lsßdand terminal rate id, pre.-s tne-s<ges lOd and terminal rate 2d. In o*her words the rates will be 3s, 2s, and Is respi c tively. This is only a temporary arrangement pending a propose ! Fede> al ent. Th-'HO tew rat s, and * rate of 4Jd between New Zea'and ard Aus'ralia hold good as from June Is' next.
May 15 In connection w'th the n-vi cable rate no agreement has been Besled or signed, so that should the Eas'ern Extension Cable Company find the Pacific Cable Board fail to come to terms in a scheme to avuid unfair competition, the old rites may ba reverted to; also, if Mr Barton cannot arrange a satisfactory agreement between the Commonwealth and the Eastern Company the question will be re-openad on that account. It is understood the Pacific Board will make several proposals to the Eastern Company to avoid a war of rates, the most important being pooling the receipts over certain lines. The whole matter will be debated at the London conference.
