The Taranaki Guards made a new and very sensible departure of a prac tical character on Thursday lasi. Oue also, whicii besides its practical value, wag thoroughly e&joyed by the men, many of whom have expressed t'w opinion that there woald be little difficulty ia securing full muster at such parades. The Guards fell iu at the Drill Shed at 2.30, an 1 <nade a forced march to Mr Bayly's propariy, north of the Waiwakaiho, covering tba di»taoc>', some three miles, in good time. Here four targets were fixed at unknown distance", and the company advanced in four sections from a distanoe of about 600 yards, to within 150 yards of the target, which represented the bead and shoulders of a man posted behind eirthwork. Twenty-two men were in the firing, and an examination of the targets showd No. 1 had 19 hits, Ho. 2 12 hits, Ho. 3 12 hits, and, No. & 22 hits, making a total of 17 per c»nt, of hits. Capt*in Oook himself as well satisfied with the result. Captain Wig.on and several members of the Rifles were interested speota-i tors.
