VOLUNTEER NEWS.
A battalion paradn of the local corps and Garrison Band was held at the Drill Hall on Monday evenicg. The battalion officers were all prasent. Afterwards the companies were exerI cised in extended order and firing [exercise, etc.
At a subsequent meeting of the Taranaki Rifles several new members j were elected. The following were also elwcted: —Lif« members : Dr. Walker, Messrs F. P. Oorkill, N. Kirig, Arrowsmith, W, F. Brooking; honorary members: Hod. W. T. Jennings, Messrs F. Webster, MrKellar, Lightband, Connect, Dockrill, Henderson, Paul, W. J. Shaw, A. Lealand, T. S. Weston, N. K. MacDiarmid. OaptaiuQuartnrmaeter Cock hacded over a sum of £23, which he had collected as honorary members' subsetiptions, r.nd was accorded a hearty vote of tbank*;.
A day for the battalion ban been arranged for the 3rd June, when it is hoped all companies will muater strongly. The locality has not yet been fixed.
Lieutenant Okey leaves by the mail train this morning for Wellington, to join the Bis'ey team, which sails by the Paptroa on Thursday.
