INGLEWOOD NEWS.

(from our own correspondent.) The second annual meeting of the In-, glewood Rifles was held last Friday] evening. Captain Leech occupied the chair. The balance-shout for the past year showed a credit balance of over £SO, which is very creditable considering the preceding year was s'arted with £7O deficit. A strong shooting committer was formed to try and bring the efficiency of the corps in this science up level with the ofcner corps in the battalion.

At a meeting of the Town Board on Monday evsning the u-.ual routine of business was rathor disturbed by a claim by a ratepayer for 30s damages for falling in an open drain, also the reported stealing of one of the street lamps and the lamplighter's ladder. The report of the clerk to the effect that the balance in the bank was yet over £IOO seemed to balance things a bit, and after a little jocularity the discussion of the damages and loss of property was discontinued. A committee meeting of the local branch of the N.Z.F.U. was held on Tuesday evesing, to coniider the repart and balance-sheet to belaid befjre the general meeting on the 25 th inst. The report shows curiDg the year over 600 members were enrolled and six separate branches started round the district. The balance-sheet shows a satisfactory credit balance of £2 8a 9d, which is very good, considering tbe small amount of the contribution. Tne chairman statsd at the meeting that so far the Union had not got any reduction in the fire insurance rates. The last answer from the Underwriters' Association received was to the effect that it (TJ.W.A.) could not see its way to make any redaction, but would further consider the case.
