EUROPEANS MAY GAMBLE, NOT CHINESE.

REMARKS BY THE CHIEF JUSTIOIf. FEB PitESS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, April 10. The appeal of certain Chinese against a conviction for gaming was concluded, and judgment reserved. During tha hearing of t.he case the inconsistency of our law as it deals with gambling was the subject of comment ay the Chief Justice. His Honor said it might be that tbe Chinese would think we were I a peculiar people when we sanctioned gambling by the totalisitor and games iti our clube, while we would not allow them to gamble. They might wonder at such inconsistency, but that was a matter for the Legislature. Mr Jellicos remarked that if he and his learned friend were playing a game of whist in China, and they were raided, handcuffed, and marched off to the lock-up, and fined .£SO, as was done in this case, Great Britain would have something to s»y. His Honor said he could not go into that question. There was no doubt our law did permit gambling in the colony, but rot by the Chinese.
