SOCIAL GATHERING AT JUBILEE VILLA.

At the invitation of Miss Wealo and Mr T. M. Welch, a large number of guests assembled at Jubilee Villa on Thursday evening to partake of a social banquet given in honour of Mr and< Mrs B. Wsale on the eve of their departure for E right'd on a pleasure trip. Both the exterior and interior of the establishment were profusely decorated, [the dining-room presenting a very pretty picture, which was enhanced by the pretty costumes and bright smiles of the ladies present. His Worship the Mayor presided, having on either j side of him the guests of the evening, | Mrs E. M. Smith and Mrs Dockrill i being also present. The guests in-j eluded the members of the Garrison Band and others too numerous fo men-

tion. Suffice it to say that it must have severely taxed the powers of the hosts to find room for all, yet not only did they accomplish this task, but did it so effectually as to ensure that everyone present had a most enjoyable time, The menu contained a most tempting variety of good things, and nothing could be better than the way in which this portion of the entertainment was carried out. The toast list; was somewhat long, but was got through with much eclat, the interspersed vocal and musical items being vary enjoyable. In proposing the toast of the evening " Our Guests," Mr Dockrill paid a well deserved tribute of praise to Mr and Mrs Weale, and alluded to the high esteem in which they were held by all who knew them, and voiced the feelings of all present by wishing them a happy trip and safe return. He then, on behalf of the boarders of the establishment, 1 presented Mrs Weale with a handsome bir brooeh set with jewels, and to Mr Weale he handed a pair of field glasses and aee. The was most enthusiastically received and accordel musical honours. In a very characteristic speech Mr Weale acknowledged the compliment, and Mrs Weale also I

briefly expressed her thanks. Mr Pardy proposed the " House of Representatives," to which Mr E. M. Smith rep ied in that style whtoh he has peculiarly made his own. In returning thanks for tho Garrison Band, Mr Newell referred to the necessity of the I band being equipped on a par with! the leading bands in order to 1 compete on equal terms, He also feelingly alluded to the valuable support which the band had always received from Mr and Mrs Weale. The other toasts included "The ladies," "The Chairman," "The Press," "Qur Host?, " The Staff" etc. During tho evening musical items were contributed by Mr Baroett (piano), Mr Crake (violin), Mr Ohilco t (mandoline),

Messrs Danovan and Piokford (cornet), |and song by little Miss JMlie Sym>, Messrs Ryan, Jenkins, and K>lly. It was not till nearly midnight before the anale item "Auld Lang Syne" was sung, and the oomtwny separated. M s* Weale avid Mr Welch are to be ocm-grntu!at-d most hvartly on the success of their memorable soo : al gathering.
