WELLINGTON EDUCATION BOARD.
MORE FUNDS WANTED, i PER PfiESS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, March 26. At to-day's meeting of the Education Board a discussion took place concern* ing the position of the Board With regard to building grants. The Board'* I income is £5500, wherewith to provide for office salaries, teachers' expetgg, new schools, scholarships, stationery and other things. The Chairman said tbat as time went on and demand* for new eohoola became more pronounced, a great deal of odium would be cast on the Buard by persons wh > did uot understand the position. The Board had an overdraft from former years which could only be wiped out by sacrificing the beat interests of education. If the funds for doing so were taken out of ti>e present income the existing grant was utterly ridiculous. However, he would not le the overdraft go further, as he would refuse to sign cheques. (Several members commented adversely on the action of the Government in peisisung in building schools in wood instead of brick.
The Board hm given its sewing teachers notico cf uibinissal in compliance with the department's circular, but loatiders wr.ong is being inflicted ou the community by this step.
