J. DA SILVA'S BANKRUPTCY.

An informal meeting of creditors in the estate of the above named bankrupt, a hairdresser ;and tobacconist, of New Plymouth was held on Thursday under the presidency of Mr J. Laweon, the Official Assignee of the northern district. Tne following creditors were present: Messrs J. A ry, Teed, Graysou, and representatives of the National Bank and Co-operative Society. Mr Quilliam represented the peti- < tioning creditor (Mr J. Avery) and Mr |G. Braund,

Mr Avery said J. Da Silva left the colony by tha mail steamer Sierra oi> Saturday last under the name of Henry Castra. As far as he knew the creditors were as follows Nationul Bank, Arabury Bros,, Miss Retford, 0. Carter, N.Z. Clothing Factory, Q, Braund, Dresden Piano Company, Co-operative Store?, E. Norton and himself. No dcubfc there were several others. He estimated the stock at £5, and the , barber'd plant at £2O. The furniture was bought on terms from Mr Braund I for about £33, of which part has beer, | paid off. The bed linen, etc., may be i worth about ,£5. The piano was got | from the Dresden Company on time payment. Da Silva got a quantity of [tobacco and cigarettes from the Cooperative Store and Mi«« Retford about a week before his departure. None of these goods were now in the shop. Presumed that he sold them. Mr. Lawson said he had asked Mr, Kerr's opinisc as to the preferential claima or otherwise in the case of the furniture and piano; but Mr. Kerr said, that he could not give an opinion until he had seen the documents relating to these goods. Since then be had learoed there was u valuable sewing machine also held on time payment, but he had not yet learned particulars. Mr. Clarke stated that his* Bank was a creditor for rent.

In reply to a creditor Mr. Lawsou said most of the boxes in the shop were "dummies."

In answer to other questions, the] Assignee said that the furniture, piano, and sewing machine were held under bailment, but he could not learn if the agreements had been registered. Tkey would have to wait to get further information on this point and Mr Kan's opinion. The liabilities could not be | estimated at present.

Mr Lawson added that he was leaving for Auckland j but the estate would be taken in hand by Mr. E.Gerard, who had come up from the Assignee's office at Wellington, and that gentleman would put the bankruptcy through its last stages. The meeting adjourned sine die.
