TARA.NAKI JOUKEY CLUB. ] SUMMER MEETING. ] Tbe Taranaki Jockey Club was favoured . with fine weather for the opening day of its Summer Meeting on Wednesday. A light shower, which fell about eleven o'clock, seemed to promise badly for a time, bun in a short while the sun sbone out, and, tempered by a light mountain jbreeze, made the day most enjoyable. There was a good attendance, somewhat above that of the first day of last year's meetiog. The racing throughout was fairly good, and the Cup race proved i-xc'ting for a time, though at the finish tbe old warrior Battieaxe carried the day with ease, the favourite —The Shannon—not getting a place. The officers all worked well, while the multitudimous duties devolving upon tlip secretary (Mr Fleetwood) were cnrii d < ut in a manner that Wt nothin.■ t> be desired. The eoursi aid appartoienta were in splendid order, reflating great credit on the caretaker, Mr Clafl'ey, An excelleut programme of music was rendered by the Garrison Bai-d during the d<y, and was muck appre iat.d by a largu number of the sp'C ators. Tke lur ch<on arrangements, in tbe hands of Messrs J. West (grandstand) and G. Boulton (outside) were everything that could be desired. Beth publican's booths were in charge of Mr I*. Clarice, and were kept fully occupied during the day. For being late in leaving the saddling paddeck for the starting post, no less than seventeen jockeys were fined XI each—sixteen of them in one race, the First Handicap Hack Race. Two spill* occurred during the day. In the First Hack Handicap Kidbrook stumbled at the start, and another horse cannoning against him brought his jockey (McOann) a very nasty cropper. Beyond a bruised hip and severe shaking, however, no injury was . done. F. Johnston, who was riding [ Evening Wonder in the First Handi--1 cap Hurdles, also had a fall through ' bis mount coming down at the jump at ' the back of the course. The veteran , was -'winded" for a time, but soon regained his legs, and although pretty ' much shaken, was 1 able to walk when [ brought back to the lawn. During the day the sum of £5734 was put through the totiKsitors, as eg&inst .£5024 for I the first day last year.
