VOLUNTEERS.

A DAitdQHT parade of the Rifles and Guards is 6ummoned foe Monday night next. The main object is to give those men who have not yet qualified for capitation another and a final chance of doing so, and thus saying themselves an expense of about £2 10s, It is understood that the opportunity will be taken on Monday night to present Lieutenant Cock, of the Rifles, with his V.D. Lieutenant Cock joined the Taranaki Bushrangers in 1861, and served with the corps during the Maori troubles till its disoandment in 1865. He then went to Timaru, and joined the volunteers there as colour-sergeant on their formation. During a stay in Oamaru Mr Cock was not associated with volunteering, there being no corps there, but op his teturn to Taranaki in 1876 ha joined the Egmont Rifles (the present Taranaki Rifl«s), and hasserved continuously up to the present time. His period of service totals 29| years. The Rifles, it is believed, are the only company in New Zealand with two members on the strength entitled to the decoration. The executive of the New Zealand Rifle Association has decided to allow the use of orthoptics at the championship meeting, which commences on Thursday, 27th February. Entries will olose on the 13th inst., and entry forms may be obtained by intending local competitors from Captain Okey. Bugler Doughty, of the Stratf'oid Rifle Volunteers, will have to discard the bugle and carry the rifle. Firing the recruits' course on Thursday he put on the high score of 132. Old shots will have to look to their laurels if they compete with Doughty at the " head and shoulder" target—three seconds allowed. His time on Thursday was very quick whilst putting on six bulls and an inn-r in seven sho's at 200 yards.—-Settler.
