WwiWGHMi, J»"uary 28,J The following is the tost of .tbi memorandum whioh forma the basis of a cablegram sent to the Imperial authorities in regard to meat oontraota:—"The Premier present* hit compliments to his and desires thai: he will by oaole advia* lb* Secretory of State for the Colonial that a Pnss cable h re states that in oonneotion with tenders for supplies of meat for tbe troop* in South Afdo t•> contract has been aigoed which, pio* vides that a p irtion of the ment* is to bj obtained from A |*e> tine, on the groend that Australia cannot supply tbe whole. The PrtmJUtt hopes that this U not oorreokM if so, it is not. just to AosWJUTa and to this colony, who can supply far in excess of the War OOot requirement* of very belt quality. The Premier strongly urge* that New Zealand should be allowed to pattieipate in supplying meat in pwlerenoe to Argentine, seeing that New Zealand and Australia's claim* should be dtp* sidered paramount as compared with those of Argentina or any other foreign country. The Premier would further point out that New Zealand hasten* lishing direct steam serving with South Africa, and bad in view sending of meat there, but if Argentine paitioipitei in the meat supplies it will mIH» ate against tbe steam service and pet* judicially affect the colony in respect'o is export trade to South Africa. Tender forms were received in this colony too late for New Zealand t > tender, and tbe Prea<i r urges that New Zealand and Australia can supply the quantity required, and that to obtain •applies from Argentine will r*u«a muob irritation."
