VOLUNTEER NEWS.

Wobk at tha volunteer camp on Wednesday evening consisted principally of outpost work, in which the men were instructed by Lieutenant Cook. After the " dismiss " a smoke concert was held in the large mess tent, at which the officers were present. Saveral volunteers and civilians rendered items, and Captain Taunton worked a gramaphone, kindly lent by Mr D, McKinnon Bain. Lieutenant-Colonel Ellis wishes it to be known that a full muster is expected to-night, when Sergeant Mes ganger will briefly explain the musketry drill, and practical wo<k will follow. The fourth competition for tha New Zealand Clothing Factory Company's clock will be fired by the Riflss this I afternoon at Frankley-road.

The following information, courteously suppied to the Rgmmt Settler, will no doubt ba read with interest by locil men. It refers to the meeting of battalion officers at tbe cimp on Monday evening: —Before leaving the camp the officers held a meeting to disauss what uniform should be adopted by the bat'alion. Lieutenant Cock maved that the uniform should consist of red tunic with blue facings and blue trou sers with red stripes.—Lieutenant Leech moved as an amendment that tbe uniform should be dark blue cloth with white facings.—A long discussion followed, and on being put the amendment was lost, the Rifles, Guards, Hawera, and Eltham representatives voting for the red, and Inglewood, Stratford, and Waitara for the blqe,— Lieutenant Whitlock (Stratford) asked whether officers bad ascertained the wishes of their companies in the mattar. From what bad been said it was evident that some of tbe companies had not been consulted by their officers, and he would, with Colonel Ellis' permission, move that captains of companies should, before the uniform was decided on, take the vote qf their respective companies and send in a report, Colonel Ellis said he thought this had been done; but finding it had not, officers present were instructed to ascertain which of the two uniforms their companies were in favour of, and to send in a report to him not later than March Ist.
