WANGANUI GAOL ESCAPEE.

PBS PBBSS AISOCUnoV. Wajtoanui, January 16. George Thurston, who escaped from gaol on the 7th inat, and was recaptured on the 11th 50 milei inland of Wanganui, was yesterday committed for trial to the Supreme Court, He alleged that the reason why he escaped was because he was bullied by the warders, and had insufficient food, about which be had' complained to a warder. The magistrate, Mr 0. 0. Kettle, commented strongly on the hardships to prisoners ana expense to the country in keeping them so long in the gaol, when they might be tried by the District Court. The gaoler mentioned that sometimes men were kept in prison six months Awaiting trial, and then acquitted at the Supreme Court,
