The Borough Council meets this evening. There are 875 cases of smallpox in London. The recommendations of the Conciliation Board on the stationary tiadeand locomotive engineers disputes provide for a minimum wage of £3 per week, la 3d per hour in freezing and gas works, and from Is to per hour elsewhere. The length of the week's work is to be from 46J to 56 hours, the latter time being for freezing works.

Carta, an Austrian officer, has baen found guilty of espionage, and sentenced to four and a half yesrs penal sevitude, days of fasting quarttrly, confinement periodically in dark eells, loss of.nobility, and banishment. The weather in the Hokitika district is very dry and hot, and bush firas are doing considerable damage. One sawmill and several huts were destroyed, and other buildings injured. A large area of timber was also destroyed. The absence of rain is injuring the crops, and the outlook for pa*toralistsis serious.
Dudley Eyre was once again before the Court on Friday morning (says the Wangatiui Herald) in connection with the charges brought against him by the police. Mr. 8. T. Fitzherbeit, for the Crown, said he had made proposals in this case to Mr. Barnicoat, who appeared for the accused, which Mr. Barnicoat agreed to, subject to the approval of the Court. He (Mr Fitzherbertj found from the papers in his hands and such preliminary investigations as he had been able to make, that it would be a work occupying a very considerable time to unravel the different matters connected with the case. It would be quite impossible to go on with the case on Saturday, and he could not say exactly how long it would be before he was ready to do so. He di<l not wish to impose any unnecessary hardship on the accused, and he proposed that the present information be withdrawn, without prejudice, on the understanding that the accused kept the police informed as to his whereabouts and address. When the case was sufficiently advanced to go on with, a bum«ions would be I sent to Eyre to attend. If, however, he failed to keep the police informed of his I address, a warrant for his arrest would be issued.
