CONVENT HIGH SCHOOL.

S PRIZE DAr.

Thebe was a large gathering of parents stud frieuda" at the Convent High S Aool on Friday to inspect the exhibition of work done by the pupils and to witness the priz) distribution ceremony. This year the quantity oF naedle work on view was much smallor thin Cor some ye»r.s past, putly owing to tlia regrettable illness of the Sister in charge of this branch of the pupil*' education, and putly to there being no special students in this branch alone. The quality of the raided silk and Mount Meltick work was, however, exceptionally fine, some of the design" very artistic and the execution such as to merit. the highest prais*being bestowed on both ceachor and | pupils. In cushion covers, Lizzie Bourkeand Florence Arundell had some specimens, those of the litter being especially brilliant, the butterflies ir. the corner being exquisite. For beauty of design, the work of Mary Franklin was far and away the best, while the treatment of the subject was replete with artistic delicacy. Katie HearneV work was remarkable for the lovely shade of the material, the beauty of the design, and the line gradation of colours. Another very handsome cover was that worked by Ruby George. Tfte Mount Millick work attracted very givat attention, that done by Maud Buchanan being very beautiful, and the initials in the centre mis perfectly finished. It would, however, be hardly possible to find a better specimen of this work than that of Edna Cock, which was as near perfection as possible. Glitdys Newland's pr.idu it ion also deserves special monion, and th« of Florence Arundell was much admired. In point lace Minnie Pote, Ka'.io Hearne, and Alice Hearne all exhibited some beautiful samples, that of the last named (a centre piece) being espacially fine. The paintings shown were, with the exceptions of two landaijipas by Miss Kennedy, all dona by fir.st year pupils, and under the circumstances may be classed as a very meritorious collection. Ida Pote had several groups of flowers, and it was easy to trace the rapid improvement made by this young lady, who evidently possesses both taste and skill, as well as the capacity for mustering detail. A group of pansies painted by Leoa McGregor was an excellent example of bold and artistic treatment. The plain needlework was as mual of a very high standard, and there were some very creditable specimens of kindergarten work. Altogether it was ' a real pleasure to tha visitors to inspect such excellent specimens of the year's work. His Worship the Mayor, Mr K, Dockrill, presented the prices, and subsequently p iid a very high tribute of praise to the teachers and pupils for ' the excellent results achieved, and he concluded by wishing them all a happy holiday. Mr na representing Trinity College, distributed the certificates awarded to the successful Candida t s at the musical examination, and . warmly congratulated the school on three of the pupils having obtained i maximum marks.

The Rev. Father Mulvihjll clo.-ed the proceedings by thanking the Mayor aod Mr MacDiarmid for their kind remarks. He also gave a few words of tender advice to the children. The great work of the school was, ho said, the moral training of the children, wh<ch be hoped would bear fi'uit &g the pupils advanced in life. The refined courtesy of the Rev. Mother and all the Sisters added much to the enjoyment of the visitors.
