DEATH OF ANOTHER OLD SETTLER.
On Thursday morning last, after a long and painful illn^s l , there passed away at her residence in Young-street Agnese, the bebv-d wife of Mr Henry Hooker. It was just abou'. this seasoo some sixty years ago tbat the deceased, who was the youngest child of the late Mr John Liye, was on her way to the colony in the M William Bryant," being then only a child of nine years of age. It may be said that almost from the time of landing on these shores the late Mis Hooker w:-s one who, until recent years, underwent such hardships and arduous toil as the present generation have little or no conception of. Daring the war time, while surrounded by a family of helpless children, she accomplished by herself all the laundry work for the naval officers stationed here. Eighteen years ago she and her husband, who was then building bridges between Few Plymouth and Opunake, dived for twelve months under canvas by the roadside, %nd the Hons. Fox and Harris, Colonel Stapp, and many otbor prominent citizens found their way to the tent while passing up and down the road, and were glad of tbe rest and homely tea which was placed at their disposal. Needless to say that there are a whole host of who r'ill deeply regret the lq§s of this old settler. Her death will be gret'ly felt by the bereaved husband, for whom, as well as for the numerous family cirolp, tho greatest sympathy is minifested, Deceased leaves seven sons | and four daughters', namely, John Rod el (in England) WJlliatfl, Ijdward, Archy, Henry, James, Joseph, Mary (Mrs Phipps), Elizabeth (Mrs Orr), Jane (Mm Pitt), and Lucy (Mrs G'.ltalian), »lso 33 grandchildren. The funeral takes plica on Sundoy and will no doubt be largdy amended.
