FIRE AT DANNEVIRKE.
PER PRESS ASSOCIATION, Dannevirke, November 20. A fire this morning destroyed a twostoried building in High-street, occupied as a boardinghouse, Calder, Drummond and Companys furniture and ironmongery establishment, and Hill's hairdresser shop. -The drapery department of the Dannevirke Co operative Company, an adjacent building, was also gutted. There were thirty inmates in the boardinghouse, and many |of them had narrow escapes. One [man, named Harris, well-known in I escaped through a window on Ito the verandah, from which he fell to the road, being stupefied with smoke. |He received severe injuries, and was taken to the hospital. Mr and Mrs Schwass and their four children had an exciting escape. Mrs Schwas was slightly burnt, while two of the children received burns while being carried through the flames by the father. , Several others received minor injuries. It is considered that the high pressure water supply saved the town from destruction. Insurances : Calder, Drummond and Company's buildings, £SOO in the Manchester and £550 in the South British, stock £IOOO in the Manchester; Mrs Laing's furniture, £IOO in the Manchester and £2OO in the South British; Dannevirke Cooperative Company, £3BOO on stock, which is only partly destroyed. The total losses above insurance will probably be £4OOO.
