THE EARTHQUAKE TERROR.

AUSTRALIAN SYMPATHY PER PBESS ASSOCIATION, Wellington, November 20. The Premier of West Australia bag cabled Mr Seddon expressiug his regret on hearing of the earthquake, and the hope that the agricultural settlement of Cheviot, in which the late Sir John McKeozie took so much interest, and which all Liberals must wish to see prosper, may not be hopelessly impaired. ' The Postmaster at Cheviot telegraphed at 8 a.m., to tte Secretary of the General Post Office :—" lam happy to be able to report almost entire discontinuance of shocks since 1.46 a.m., and 4 a.m. At these hours we experienced slight tremors, but nothing further has been felt. The residents all enjoyed a night's rest, for the first time since the initial shock."

Christohoeoh, November 20. There have bean no further shocks at Cheviot.

It is stated that tha Government aid may tike the form of assistance for repairing buildings. Bricklayers have arrived, and are being kept busy. HON. HALL JONES' REPORT. Wellington, November 20. The Hon. Hall-Jones, in his report to the Premier from Cheviot, says that the chief sufferers are men with small holdings up to 20 acres. Their cob houses are completely destroyed, and they will require some financial assistance. He is getting tents from the Government works at Waipara to lend them, and larger holders, will, he thinks, get along. Two of the bridges are badly damaged, timber 12 by 12 being broken through. These should be put in hand at once, with the exception of the Bluff-road, which he had not yet seen at time of telegraphing. The roads are not much damaged. If no further shocks occur, the people will soon settle down.

EARTHQUAKES IN VICIORIA. Received 21,1.19 a.m. Melbourne, November 20. Severe earthquake shocks have occurred at Moondarra, near Walhalla (120 miles east of Melbourne). Several barns and sheds were thrown to the ground. I
