TAXATION, AND HOW TO LIGHTEN THE BURDEN.
A VERY interesting address was given on this question by Mr. H. Q. Ell, at Warea, on Monday evening, under the auspices of the Warea branch of the Farmers' Union. Mr. Burgess, chairman of the Union, was in the chair and introduced tbe lecturer in a vr-ry appropriate speech, in the cou' se of which he expressed the pleuKij e he f. It in introducing Mr. El to the meeting to discuss such an import int tubject. Mr. Ell, who was very warmly received,' then spoke on much the name lines na I at New Plymouth, emphasing the enormous relief it would be to the general taxpayers if the large sum now sent out of the colony for interest on loans could remain in the colony by the money being advanced by a State Bank owned by the people of the colony. At the conclusion of the address a number of questions were asked, after which a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Ell, and a resolution recommending the question of the establishment of a S ate Bank to the favourable consideration of the Government was cirried unanimously.
