VOLUNTEER NEWS.
NOTBB BY "VEDETTES." The Guards paraded at the Drill Hall on Tuesday night, when there was a large muster, undoT Captain Taunton and Lieutenants Oook and Homes. was also present. After drill, Captain Taunton asked the men if they were willing to take part in the field parade on Monday next, and expressed a hope that there would be a full muster. Only about three or four voted at first. Subsepuently eighteen signified their intention of going. Captain Taunton expressed disappointment at the small number, and pointed out the great value of the work which would be done, in dealing with mounted troops. It is to be hoped that the men may see their way to attend in strong force, The number of Rifles who voted favourably on Monday night was disappointing, but the Guard's small vote was even more so, The men are no doubt somewhat in the dark as to their ability to get away on the Monday, but as the day is to bs a public holiday, it is hoped that difficulty may be got over. That being so, it is probable the companies will yet turn out creditably.
