THE SAND PUMP QUESTION.
TO THE) EDITOB. Sir. —ln your letder on Mr Napier Bell's report you well eaid, " Everything relating to harbour matters is watched w : th i'eep I as-ure you thi* rfp.irt was eagerly re id by ratep:>yerß, ai d needless to s-iy it was a great disippointmeat to many who have patiently watched his coming. And then for him to conclude by advising that the pipe be removed, so as to drop the sand a little quicker into the harbour, appears astonishing. Mr Sarten must have foreseen this when voting to continue the sand pump another month. Hardly so far lost as your contemporary tried to make out. Mr Bell cin not recommend the Board to spend £7BO to try the experiment of an openiog in the breakwater, though thousinds have beenspßnton the sand pump to life the sand from one side of the breakwater to the other. Sir, you speak of a further repoHi being forthcoming. I hope so for our satisfaction and Mr Napier Ball's credit. We country ratepayers will be most eager to knew what w 11 become of tin forty tons of sand per hour being put into the harbour—whether it is staying there, or going along the beich. I con sider Mr Bell's report hit, left the question as it was before he came —that in in a very unsa'iifnotoiy position. Thanking you in anticipation. -1 am, etc., Country Ratbpatkb, Huirangi, 30th October.
