VOLUNTEERS.

A good deal of interest is being taken in the " field day " of our local volun-' tears on Novamber 11th, not only from I the fact that the Hawera Mounted Rifles are taking part, but also that the men will have the opportunity of putting in a Government daylight parade, and also a personal payment parade on the same day. Twenty rounds of blank ammunition are to be served out to each man, so that when the two armies meet they should have a hot time of it. The Northern--Division will consist of the Hawera Mounted Rifles, Inglewood Rifles, and Waitara Rifles, The Southern army will be made up of the Taranaki Rifles, the Guards, and Cadets. Both sides are to start from their head quarters ao the same time, and then the scouts on both sides will have a chance of distinguishing themselves, for on them a great deal w ill depend, j This knd of outdoor work must commend itself to all keen volunteers, for apart from the usefulness of the work, a change from the Drill Hall "form j fours" and other indoor movements must bo beneficial to all ranks. Lieutenant-Colonel Ellis, V.D., is to act as umpire for the day, the southern ; array being under the command of , Captain Okey, and the Waitara Division under Captain Taunton, j The New Plymouth Ambulance As- [ sociation have been interviewed it) t reference to their taking part in the action, and it is sincerely to be trusted they will avail themselves of this | opportunity of not only coming to I light, but putting into actual practice I the good work that has been taught them.
