NEW ZEALAND ILLUSTRATED.

1 AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS, . CHRISTMAS NUMBER. 1 Thkbb is propibly no Christmas annual i produced anywhere in th* colonies : whose appearance is so cordially wel- > corned as that of the Christmas Numi ber of the Auckland Weekly News. These Numbers h ave won for them- [ selves a reputation for high-class i literary workmanship and artistic exi cellence which no other colonial production has bean ab'e to attain. ■ Irdeed, we question whether from an ' art point of view anything finer than the il!u9tratioQß which appear in these Numbers is to be found in any country. This year's Number, which has just made its appearance, worthily maintains the high charactar of its pre- - decessors by the variety aud interest of its. contents and the excellence and wealth of its illmtrations. It opens I with a graphically-written historical » sketch of the growth of New Zetland, which will be found cot only eminently t readable, but valuable and informing. 3 The stories which follow the intro--3 ductory article are fresh, original, and 7 racy of the soil. " Shooting and Fishing in New Zealand" is dealt with t in a highly interesting manner. The 3 prize competitions and the children's 3 section are, as usual, pleasing features 1 in the Number. Ic is impossible to speak in toj high , praise of the illustrations with which J the Number teems. Nothing better 9 has ever bben produod. Ev<>ry page f; is profusely illustratej, and to give 3 somo idea of the nature of the picture?, 3 we quote a (r.w of their titles:— t.'Sqini'ing a Kauri L-ig in New Zei--7 j land Uuab,'' Kauri Being Rifted I Down the Mmgonui R ver,'' A Timber [Ship oo the Northern Wairoa,' /•A. New Ze<!and Gumdirfser Starting out to Work,' ' A Typical Gum--1 diggers' Camp,'' New • Gold Mine,' ' a Gold Dredge » to Work,' 'Shipping Wool from an East 9 Coast Station,'' New Ze*knd Olenitis and Arum Lilies,'' A*udy of the New s ZealandFlaxßush,"Capturing aWha'e r with the Aid of a Net;' ' Tena Ko«, a 3 Typical YouDg Maori;' ' After the Day's Work, a Pastoral Scene in the Wairat rapa;'' A Scene on Lake Wa'kire,';' A i Typical New Zealand Ohristmas Scene,' ■> 'Station Life in the North Island,' A - Summer Scene in the North Island,'' A a South Island Summer Scene,' Mount Egmonr,' 'Picturesque New Zealand i Coastal Scenery,'' The Kea Parrot De- ? straying Sheep,'' The Start of a New s Zealand Bush Farm,' (a very striking full-page picture), ' A Maori Belle of f To-day,' 'The Famous Hochstetter Icet fall,' ' Maoris Washing Their Clothe* 3 in a Boiling Spring,'' A Sudy of New I Zealand Tree Ferns,' ' A Summer Holil day on the Mokau River,' a fine series i of pictures, representing exciting scenes in connection with pig hunting, deer 3 stalking, trout fishing, pheasant shoot- =• ing, and wild cattle hunting; 'The > Picturesque Pelorous River,' ' A Sum--3 mer Morning on the Waikato River,' I and many others, the illustrations - numbering over one hundred. The presentation plate is a very > beautiful picture, entitled 'A Daughter l of the Sunny South,' by an eminent English artist. It alone is worth the ' price charged for the entire publicir tion. • ■i The piper is admirably adapted for eendiug Home, and if sent by the next l mail will get there just in time for i Christmas. Miss Retford, the New ; Plymouth agent, is rapidly booking orders. I
