Tbe first annual dinner of the First New Zealand Mounted Rifles Association w*B held to-night, this evening being the second anniversary of the departure of the First Contingent from the colony for South Africa. There was a fine muster cf members, and repreß°ntative' wire present from points as far apii t as Auckland and Invercargill. The Pr?mie- was amongst those in attendance, and in the course of a speech said he thought the colony bad ceased sending contingents away too soon. He had thought so ever since tbe last contingent took its depir f ure. The proceedings were very hearty thronghou f . During the evening Mr Seddon said he had written to the Colonial Office asking that Lord Ranfurly's t rm of office as Governor might be extended.
