STRATFORD NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) , Mr T. H. Penn, the borough clerk, finding his private business increasing, hasresobed to resign his borough clerkship. Mr Penn has been so long a prominent Ugare in municipal matters here that his retirement will leave a big gap. • It is, however, satisfactory to note that he is retiring on account of having more profitable employnwnfc to resort to. The Bank of New South Wales open here shortly, in premises secured in Mr Burg.-ss' new arcade. There should be room for another baok here. The Bank of New South Wales, by the way, already has a fair connection in the district, especially in Midbirat. A good deal of comment has been aroused by the fact th*t tbe travelling expenses of tbe chairman of the Licensing Committee for last meeting cime to £ll. The bill was paid under protest by the County Council. As there are four meetings in the year, and as the revenue' derived from licenses by the Cotinty is only £SO, the chairman seems to be rather an expansive luxury. The Act, I understand, clearly provides that only actual travelling expenses to and from the meeting are to be charged. If this is so, the auditor should have something to say on the question of this payment. Tenders for the new Town Hall dose in a few days, and with good luck the building should be finished before next winter.
