VOLUNTEER NEWS.

!Thb Taranaki Rifles paraded last night, under Captain Okey and Lieutenants Cock and Hooker. There was a good muster, and the men were exHrcieed in various evolutions by the office: s. Afterwards a meeting was held, at which Cap'ain Okey presented Sergonni. i Lever with the m6dal won by him in last season's competition. A letter was read from the Garrison Band, asking the assistance of the company in making the ball to be held on Thursday a success. Captain Okey said be intended to do all he could for the Band, and called upon all members to do the same. The majority of the men intimated their intention to comply with the request. The opinion wcs expressed tbat it was the duty of every volunteer in the battalion to assist tho Band, which was now part of the f >rce, and which was also working so bard to come to the fore in the forthcoming Band Contest. One new candidate for the Rifles was proposed, and it vas resolved to hold the half-yearly meeting of the company on Monday nex'. Members of the Rifles attending thf> Garrison Band Ball are inviteit tu appear in uniform.
