Thompson, proprietor of the Cri terion Hotel, has kindly consected to dance a Highland Fling at the Star Social this epening. Mr. N. Miller, dentist, has taken irto partnership B. V. The arrangements in connection with laying the foundation stocn of the new Church at Bell Block on Thursday, '2lth instant, are such as to ensure a most enjoyable outing, and no doubt a. large number of visitors will be attracted. The, Wellington Garrison Band have intimated an intention of taking part in tbe forthcoming Band Contest here. While one of Mr. Knight's carts was taking a load of timber along DevoA street on Wednesday afternoon the axle snapped when about opposite Mr Crocker,s shop. The shaft horse was thrown down as the dray went over on its side, but was extricated unhurt, and no other damage, beyoad the broken axle, was done. The Dunedin pelice on Wednesday captured a man named Lee, alias Wilson, the author of several daylight burglaries. It iB supposed he came here from Wellington or Ohristchnroh, arriving on the 29th August, and was a respectable looking person. He had £2O and a set of skeleton keys on his person. The man's lodgings were searched, when broken jewellery of all kinds, and other housebreaking implements were found. His plan was to smash and smelt gold and then sell the gold. The Waitekauri Gold Mining Company's return for the four weeks ending 7th September, show that 2182 tons of ore were treated for bnllion valued at £3312. The Ha trie's Bay Education Board has decided to adopt uniform sets of school books for the whole educational district This new system comes into force after the annual examination.

This, however, is not to be taken as prophetic, but visionary, and should spur the Taranaki men to go in and win. A final reminder is given of the Star Olub's social this evening. It promises to be one of the most attractive gatherings held by tbe Clnb.
The greatest interest is being taken in the Railway Bocial,'not only on account of the excellent object in view, namely, to benefit the railway offiova library fund, but quite as much by reason of the popularity of the whose courtesy and willingness to oblige all classes of passengers throughout the district is so well known that there seems to bea general desire to take advantage of the opportunity for giving practical evidence of appreciation of those services by tlia public. There will in all probability be a very large gathering at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday next, 25tb inst., and it has occurred to us that this is just one of those occasions on which the Department might easily recognise the admirable way in which the railway staff has successfully coped with the abnormal traffic of the last few months. This could be done in a way which would add considerably to the success of the social and afford an evening's pleasure to many officials who would be only too glad of th,e chance of having a share in the pleasure of the social if possible. The running of a special train, saytoHawera after midnight, would we are sore bo a boon to the country officials, and it is to be hoped that the matter will receive attention. That the child is father to the man,' physically as well as mentally, is one of tho3e truths that can never be too often insisted upon, and the thoughtful parent will be careful above all to see that her child has the proper nourishment to establish its constitution. A good constituiion is a rock on which alone suocess and strength can be built. Among the various foods that science commends in these days for this purpose, none holds a higher place than Nbaves Food for InFAtfTB And Invalids, iccording to trie best medical testimony, and, what is perhaps better still, the grateful testimony of thousands of happy mothe-s, this food contains all the essential elements of strength, and while it is pleasant to the taste and eagerly taken by children, it may also be used by persons of all ages with decided benefit.
