PROGRESSIVE CHRISTCHURCH.
PER PBSSS ASSOCIATION. Christchdbch, September 17. The City Council has decided to ask the Government to appoint one local body here to control the proposed abattoir?. This action was taken because other bodies had threatened to start abattoirs of their own, and it was thought two institutions would be useless. Steps will be taken by the municipal authorities to establish a public fish market in Ohristchurch, and a site will be selected soon. ' The Fire Committee of the Oity Council is collecting information regarding the use of motors for hauling fire engines, in place of horses. A suggestion has also been made in favour of motor water carts. It has been decided to put down water mains in a part of Ohristchurch for the supply of water for sanitary, fire prevention, and Btreet watering purposes. The machinery for the destructor has arrived, and the work of constructing the elevated roadway, shaft and buildings will be gone on with at once. Steps will be taken to have the houses in the city properly numbered.
