DEATH OF MR. OCTAVIUS CARRINGTON.

Of late the hand of death has bt en touching several of those who were the pioneisof the settlement of this town, the latest call from hence being Mr, OcUviua Currington, who passfd away after a very short illness on Thursday morning, being a victim to the prevailing epidemic. He survived his brother but a short while, and although of latu 1 it was evident that increasing years] were telling on his physic .1 strength, | yet to a 1 appearancehe s'ill bad a fund | of vitality which bid fair in the ordinary course of even's to carry him forward for several years. But it was not to be and after attaining to the great Bge of 85 he has passed to his rest regretted and esteemed by all who knew him. He must have been about 24 years nf age when he ome to the colony in 1840 in the capacity of chief surveyor to his brother, the late Mr. F. A. Oarrington, and he landed at Moturoa in February, 1841. Not only did he assist in the work of laying out the town of New Plymouth, but also that cf Lystolton. As surveyor to the Provincial Govt rumen t and subsequently to the Government he was responsible for a great deal cf the roading in the province. This was, as well may be imagined, a task of no small difficulty, which in the main was creditably performed. For many years past he has led a quiet, useful life end there is no doubt he will be greatly micscd. His was a very familiar figure amongst the congregation at Te Henui Ohurch, for which he seemed to have a great partiality. He leaves four daughters and two sons, namely, Mrs. Subtor, Mrs. Reginald Bayley, Mrs. Brewster, Mrs. Samuel, and Messrs. F. and W. Oarrington. The late Mrs. O'OarroU was also a daughter of the deceased gentleman,
