There was a large attendance of spectators at-the Hawke's Bay-Taranaki match which played in the Recreation Grounds on Tuesday afternoon The ground had received considerable care and attention, but was unplesantly slippery in places. Fookes next not the ball from the scrum and kioked well up the field, and following up just spoilt the return, but McCarthy came to the rescue of Hawke's Bay. Rhortly afterwards Young pioked up the ball from a "cramblins rush and scored first blood for Taranaki. O'Dowda's kick at goal was a failure. After some give and take p'ay the ball was taken to tbe Taranaki end, but Oallaghan picking np quiekly kicked out near the half { way flag. For off-side play Taranaki were penalised in a good position but the Taranaki forwards oharged down the kick at goal. A free kick to Taranaki for the ball not being put into tbe sorum straight. Dr. Fookes had a drop, kick, but the ball went wide. O'Dowda shortly afterwards gave the visitors a taste of his dribbling abilities, and taking the ball up to the line pioked up and passed to Glenn, who was pushed into touoh-in-goal. After the kiok out Humphries i got possession of the ball, and passing Ico Mynott that player transferred to ' Carter, who passed to Fookee, who was : grasped close to the Hawke's Biy line. Hawke's Bay forwards oWr9d their line splendidly, but Taranaki were not to be denied, and Thomas get'ing possesion of tbe ball from a dribb'iog ru«h soored the second try for Taranaki. O'Dowda again failed with th<* k'ck at go*'. Shortly after the kick oir, the Hawke's B iy full-back was disabled, ard the game was stopp-d for s"me time to enable Waita', of the 01 : f ron Football Club, to take his place. After the game was resumed Taranaki got on a fine passing rush, wbioh was spoilt by Carter fa : l : ng to take the ball. Play was now confined to the Hawke's Bay quarters, and Fookes went very near scoring, being pushed, out near the corner flag. Hawke's By cleared their line by hard kiokiog, end Smith getting possession of the ball io, Hawke's Bay 25's made a splendid run and scored under the p s's, Allen kicked an essy goal. After the kick out some give end take pliy ensued about half-way, and Hawke's Bay wore penalised for obstruction. Humphries kicking high, O'Diwda followed up fast and scored under the pos'B. Allen was again successful with the kick at goal. Hawke's Bay now livned up a bit and taking the play to Taranaki quarters Allen lying on the ball gave them a free kick. The' bill b-ing placed for D. McCarthy that payer kicked a goal for Hawke's Biy. (Scores: Taranaki 11 points, HawLe'< i Bay 3. Half time was oalled shortly afterwards.

McCarthy kinked off for the s'-art of f .he second spell, and the visitors putting a little more life into their play, and O'Connell get'ing a ma r k, placed the ball for Wait*;, who made a good, though unsuccessful shot at goal. Hawkes Bay forward?, he ided by Walker and Shortland got on a dribbling rush, and carrying - all before them, crosfed the Tararaki I'D*, bu> he ball went out of bounds when a *core seemed l'kely. Taranaki now took the play to the Hawkes Biy quarters, and Mynott whipped tbe ball >ip smartly, passed to Carter, who pvsed to Fookes, who rsn to th« Hawkes Bay 25, and centering the ball, Mynott got possession, pwed t"> Youny, who sco'ed under 'he posts. Allen was again successful with the kick at goal. ' kicked out, and Taranakat once took the play to tho other end if tbi'ground, and a scrum being formrd, Allen got hold of the hall, scored, the kick at seal being a failu-e. Hawkes Bay row had a bad time in keeping their line clear, the Tararak' j forwards taking all before them, andj Glasgow making an open'ng, pnss d to Billing, who Allen kicking » go»l. Af'er the kick out, Hawkes Bay started a dribbling rush, but w re ft ppid by Oallaghan, who picked up 'h - b>ll, and made a good kick, Humphri«s, Hawk u s Biy, marking. The ball was placed for D. McCarthy, whose kiok went wide of the mark. Taranaki, once more took the plav to the visitor quarters, and Thomas and Glenn croesed I the line, the kick at goal in both in- ' stances being a failure. Hawke* Bay I wore still defending when time was called, the final score being Taranaki 35, Hiwkes Bay 3. The game calls for very litt'e ornament, tbe visitors b'ing outclassed, and if it had not been, for the overaagerness of some of the Taranaki forwards the scare would have been much larger. The backs on the HawW Biy sid" gave a very poor disp'ay of football, and don't seom to understand tbe passing game at al'—in fact they never ittempted to pass. Their forwards cave a better account of themselves, a' d now and then got on tome beautiful dribbling rushes, S'rickl nd, Walker, and McCarthy loading the way, these striving hard to savo dafeat. On the Tarannki side the backs all played a splendid game, their passing being a treat to witness, and of the forwards, O'Dowdi, Young, Glenn, and Glasgow played well. Mr G. Syme was referee, and Messrs Geo. Smith and J. F. Stohr line umpires for Hawkes' Bay and Taranaki respectively.
