HUMANITY TO ANIMALS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Your readers should tender you h»arty thanks for the suggestive article in th : s morning's (Moaday) piper, on humanity io animals. The htading might ba changed to "■ What wh have to growl about" as an assumedly christian civilised peop'e. The "powers that on" might also learn many a 'iseful lesson from despised nations. I was about to write to you for information as to the existence of a Humanitarian Society in New Plymouth, for there is work to be done. My attention baa been called to the miserable accommodation provided on the trains for dogs. The railway department should be approached on the subject, for it is disgraceful cruelty to convey degs on a long journey (or any journey) in the cramped little) boles provided for them. And one cannot help asking how often thuse insanitary boxes are thoroughly cleaned, so as to «nsure safety from infection, fordo? diseasos are easily transmitted. One can readily imagine th« owner of a valuable dog, especially of larga eize, filing more inclined to humanely pat Jan end t> the animal's existence than to subject it to the cruel suffering of a Hong day's tiavel on our New Zealand railways. The department makes ifoir ehaigefordog faro, then in the name of pity let it provide adequate accommodation.—l am, etc., Humane.
