HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
Thb annual general meeting of the | Taranaki Horticultural Society was: held in the Bjtough Chambers lastj evening, Owing to the inclemency of j the weather there was only a p'or attendance of members. Mr. W. B.wley | (President) occupitd the chair, and' apologised for the abs'nca of Mifsejj Te-tar and S'auf.rd, who were unavoidably prevented from amending. The Chairman r<-ad his report, which, in eftVct, was as fo'lows:—A (lis'inc. improvement was nofcicaable in the, financial position of the Society, and a' greater interest had been shown in its affairs by the public. The yaar began with an overdraft of £24 2a 6d,. but the succes of the ppring fho»v enabled this to be extinguished, leaving a credi' batancj of £6 13s 4d. The success wbs due to the fine weather—finer than usually prev.iilel when the spring shows were held—leading the public j to anticipate an exceedingly god display ; and the exhibition tul'y justified the anticipation. The Society's thanks were due to exhibitors of rose blooms, which stimulated many to add to their collections for future shows. Tnis" success inducei the holding of an autumn show, on 2nd May, when the was justified by the f-xc.-llent sh>w of chrysan'hemums. 0 ving, however, to the large amount of p iz-i-money given, and a smaller attendance of the public, the show resulted in a loss of £9 14s 31; tin jMSr ending with ad. ficit of £3 11. Despite the financial lcs', however, the Society had no rfasoa to regret the holding of the two ehoiv?.
