During the past week or two it hat I been freely rumoured that dvelopments of a sensational character might bo expected in connection with the locil telegraph offige, and further colour was given to thrss statement* when it became known that an official, who hrd for many years Leld a responsible prsition in <he department, had been suspended. It is now under* stood that he, with another peraon, will be changed at the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday with having manipulated telegrams with the oljujt of defrauding a well-known bookmaking firm near Wellington. The offence is said to have been committed on the Riocarton racecourse at the last meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Olub, and consisted of sending a telegram to the bookmakers asking for a crttin sum to be put on a hone which had just snoreeded in winning a race, end antedating the telegram by half an hour.
