THE STYCHK CASE. A NKW TRIAL REFUSED. PKtt PHKSS AIROCIATIOK. Wkllingkw, April 3. In delivering judgment in the Stych» ca«e, thts Chief Justice said that in civil cases the principle upon whick applications for new trials were dealt with is [that the verdict of a jury will not bo wet aside unless ft is such that! no reasonable men could have com* to such a conclusion. There must, of course, be a higher degree of assurance in critmnsl cases, but if the jury w«r*> of opinion that this higher degree was atfcaice i, thee, if this opinion was oaa which reasonable men eauldeome to, the Court could not interfere. Proceeding to deal with the evidence, Hi* Honor considered the jury were fully ju »t ified in the view they took of it* pro* oabiluy, especially with regard to points of similarity ia,the unknown letters to Dr. Clayton, propojing to murder Mr*. Siyeho, with thiw i admitted to b*> Scyche's, acid with regard to the alleged accident to accused's typewriter. Th* cuss, therefore, was cot one for a new trial. Each of the other Judges delivered written opinio* concurring witk the Chief Justice.
In the casa of Patterson ▼. the Canterbury Jockey Club the Appeal Court by a majority allowed the appeal They held that as the racecourse waa vested in trustees the latter could net delegate to the Jockey Club the right to nuke regulation*; and, in the absence of these, the public had an abas* lute right to eater. The Chief Justice and Mr. Justice Cooper disssnled, on the ground that while no valid regulations existed, the public had no aba*. lute right of entry, and the Jooktf Club being in possession could kesp anyon* ous.
