There was a good muster to farewell the departing troopers at the stition on Monday morning. His Worship the Mayor was present and addressed a few appropriate remarks in the coarse of which he asked the men to apolog'se to those who recently took their departure for his inability k «o present »nd wish thorn a safe return. The Now Plymouth City Band arrived by the 5 p.m. train on Saturday, and to tho lively strains of tho " Marmion '* march proceeded to their quarters at the Newmarket Hotel. The Band presents a very neat appearance, aad is in charge of Mr. A. G. Haigh, an ex-Dunedin mnsician, who for several years occupied the position of bandmaster to the Mosgiel Band. The visitors include quite a number of young players; this will be their first contest, and they deserve great credit for oveicoming (ho nnmerons difficulties experienced in making the trip. Alfred Kaynsr, who attempted suicide' was ordered by the Magistrate at Wellington to come up for sentence when called upon. Briggs, the cricketer, has had a serious relapse, and has been removed to an asylum. It is now stated that Dr, Thernton, Sate Bishop of Ballarat. has be"n appointed assistant Bishop of Manchester. The quantity of kerosene stored in the borough is 216 cases, 14 of which are in the store on the reclaimed land, the remainder being in various shops. The absence of eo many troops in South Africa and China saves India 36 lakhs of rupees durins; the currant year. . ..
A young man named Augustus-'^tpoj , e,-in the employment of Keuter's Pr>ss gave himsnlf up to the police at Christchurch. He admits embezzling £2OO belonging to the Agency. 1 Cr. Ca'tloy, at the Borough Council en Monday, said that from what ho had seen during his recent trip to Wellington, he could say ihat the streets and gutters in New Plymouth were far cleaner than in any of the towns he had passed through. It is to be hoped that the ratepayers of New Plymouth will not catch the ward abolition fever. A number of towns have got it badly. One town we know of has established and abolished wards five times. The abolition of wards means giving the thickly-populated portion of the town the opportunity of running a ticket and electing it. In other words, it means "to him that bath shall be given, and from him that hath not shall be taken away, even that which he hath."
The poverty of the borough finances was again exemplified on Monday evening, when Cr. Bellriager took up from the table two or three dirty looking pieces of card-board, and aliuded to thair having to do duty as blotting-pads.
