A passenger-car will be attached to the goods train, leaving New Plymouth for the Breakwater, about 3 p.m. A gold medal is being offered for compotii tion among the old boya of the Central I School, at the Swimming Carnival on Thursday afternoon next. Mr. Stohr is taking nominations.

Ward is expected to arrive in New Plymouth from Auckland by the Takapuna thra morning. He will make a short stay in town. About a dozen settlers at Hawera an'l a similar number at Stratford are (says'the Hawera Star) being proceeded against by the Stock Department for exposing lousy sheep for sale. The Wellington Post has established anew eonnty. In a recent issue it says:—"The Kgmont County Council has agreed to facilitate the formation of the proposed Elthara Borough, but does not commit itself as tr> boundaries." Mr. Justice Day, at Bristol, sentenced David Allporfc, insurance agent, formerly a lay evangelist, to fifteen ycaTs'penal servitude, and Louise Cliappol to five years' f'»r attempting to murder AHport's children The evidence difclosed an attempt to starve the children to death, the object being to draw the insurance money on their lives.
Whan the Rev. Daan McKenna was at Home he visited Dr. O'Carroll, and the many friends of the genial doctor will be glad to learn that he wai very much better and delightel to meet a friend from New Plymouth. His interest in the place and people was as keen as ever, and he spoke hopefully of returning. The doctor is very comfortable at the residence of his brothor, where he has every care and attention. The priest's house and church aro only a few chains away, and the doctor is able to attend public worship regularly. The Citizens Committee, approved by the King for the purpose of considering proposals for a memorial te the late Queen, recom-1 mends a statue to be the chief feature of the : memorial to be erected near Westminster Abbey or Buckingham Palace. In the Reichstag Count von Bulow, in reply to qusstions about the Kaiser's visit to Jingland, said: "We will live in peace with England, but practical politics are dependant upon reciprocity. Foreign politics will not be affected by dynastic considerations or ties of relationship." Th« battleships Albemarle and Montaguo and the first class cruiser Drake have been launched. '•
