SCENERY PRESERVATION SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Scenery Preservation Society was held on Wednesday last. Present: Messrs. W. H. Skincer (chairman), Dockrill, McDiarmid, 8 W. Sb&w, Hughes, Strauchon and Oollis. . At the s'iggesfron of the native chv f* Te lUngi, Tuakaka, and Taniora Whatuu, of Mokau. it was decided ?o take sfps to have the island of Motatawß, cear the mouth of the Mokau river, handed over to the Society in trust, and a Committee was appr.iutsd to cirry out tlifi m^'tor. With the obj r ct of p' for the (olony and maintaining its attractiveness as a resort for tourists it was considered very desirable that special efforts should be made to presorvo the bush on both banks of the Mokau river and with that object it was dooided to ask the Minister of Lands te introduce legislation enabling the Governmont to acquire the surface rights of both banks of tho Mokau River for atout half a mile on either side.
The Chairman's action relative to the expanse.! of fixing tho boundaries of the Whakuiowa Pah as c»rried out by Mr Chambers was confiimad. It was decided to take steps to fence the Katere reserve at Waiwakaibo (at the back of Mr N. KiDg's si ley aids) to protect the native bush, and the President was rfqu-stol to "lit 'rview the Natives for t..e pu. po e of making the nece3fary arrangmouts. Stpps nre also to be taken to fence the Puke Kohatu Park at Waitara (an ancient native buii.l ground) A grant Jifit exepadipg £IQ was vot'.d to Mr. 0. Ro«e and ethers towards expense of securely fencing the Pohokura Pah at Urenui.
It was reported that the wo k of feaoing the pahs at Koru, Kiiroa, Matai'awa, and Stony River had been carried out.
