The Great Eastern Railway Company ordered 8000 tons of steel rails from Pittsburg, America. The following trains leave New Plymouth station to-<?ay for the Breakwater, connecting with steamers mentioned below, as follows: —5.45 a.m., Takapuna (from North) ; 8 a.m., Rotoiti (from South); 9.30 a.m., Takapuna (for Bruth); 9.30 p.m., Rotoiti (for North).' A passenger-car will'bo attached to tho goods train, leaving New Plymouth for the Breakwater, about 8 p.m. The clergy and congregation of the Church of St. Matthew. A wedding which attracted exceptional attenrion took place at Bell Block Church on Tuesday, the contracting parties being Maoris. The wedding breakfast, which was very largely attended, took place at the residence ef the bride's father at Kaipakopoke. The half-mile Swimming Ohampionship of Australia was won by R. Cavill, in liimin 59 2-ssecs. Champion, the New Zealand representative, was amongst the starters. The organ of the Amalgamated Railway Servants Society of Great Britain has been mulcted in £IOOO damages for accusing a' railway superintendent of drunkenness. A London " Hooligan " has been sentenced to twenty years' penal servitude for manslaughter of a policeman at Wbitechapel. The Duke of Devonshire, writing to the Empire Review, says Imperial federation is prematsre, and any attempt to define unity by pen, ink, and parchment is more likely to endanger than safeguard tho Empire. He absolutely dissented from the suggestion that the Imperial Parliament should display greater interest in colonial questions, and says the absolute internal independence of the autonomous celoaies is a recognise.! condition of the existence of the Colonial Empire. In a San Franciseo musical periodical called •' Comical Chords" appears a very flattering reference to Mr. D. Mcliinnou Bain, the enterprisingManagerof the Colonial Piano Company, Mr. Bain's energy and business power are deemed worthy of special mention, and his ability as a musician is warmly praised.
The programme for the concert by the Town Baud this Friday evening, is as follows:—March, "Belle of Chicago"; selecsion, " Sweet Brier " ; valse, " Oubra Libra "; polka, " Liberati "; overture, " Golden Wand"; schottiscbe, "Beatrice"; valse, " Love's Awakening "; march, " Garland of Bflowers"; "God Save the King." Mr. H. Cottier has very kindly consented to conduct the band till after the races.
