POPULATION AND VITAL STATISTICS.

PKH PKEBS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, February 7. The papulation of the colony on 31st December, was estimated at 810,536 inclusive of 39,854 Maoris. At the end of 1899 the estimated population, {exclusive of Maoris, was 756,505, the ! births regi*terpd during 1900 numbered 19,546, and daaths, 7,200, leaving an incrfinse, according to the vital statistics of 12,346. Arrivals in the colony during the year were 18,074, acd departures 16,243, leaving a balance of 1831. The total increase was accordingly 14,177, which, with the Maori population as to the census of 1896, makes the puplation of the colony 810,536. Tne ruinbor of Chinese in th<? colony i* (•stimated at 3077 including S4 fern ileß. The increase in the population during 'ho yc-ar has been at the rate of 1.87 per cent. The comparison of the birth, death, and marriaye rat«s for the colony for the last three years, U as follows : Births, 1898, 25-74 p»r 1000; 1899, 25'12; 1900, 25'60 ;detths, 1898, 9-84 ; 1899, 1021; 1900, 9-43; m.rringes 1898, 6-91; 1899, 7 28; 1900, 7.66.
