KORU.

(fbom our own cokbhspondent). Since I last wrote, I hear that Mr, R. Putt had lost twe cows just after calving, and eight young pigs. These are some ef the losses the farmers have to fight against, and yet the townspeople think a farmer's life is all pleasure, Xes it is, milking: night and morning in all weathers. We cannot wear white collars and cuffs and think ourselves I hardly done by if we don't get a halfholiday once a week, to say nothing of Sunday. A storekeeper will tell you he cannot live owing to his bad debts; what about the farmers, are not these losses their bad debts ?

Bushfelling for the season is nearly ended, and very few large cheques have I been made, as the weather has been so ; unfavourable. One day fine and five [wet has been about the average this iseason.

At a meeting of the Oakura Road Board, held in the schoolhouse, Koru, on the evening of the 15th, Mr. Frank Julian was elected Chairman in place of Mr. G. Looney, resigned. It is reported that the last election of members is informal. It appears that Mr. A. Good was appointed Returning i Officer some time ago, and filled the office at the last general election. Sinca then Mr. Leslie has been appointed clerk, and has acted as Returning Officer, yet no notice has bean given Mr. Good of the termination of his appointment. The question now is; " Who is the Returning Officer of the Oakura Road Board V ' Mrs. P. Raill's friends will be glad to hear that she has returned home from the hospital, and is much improved in health, though not quite strong yet. Our school is not to be examined this year. Such is the report brought home j by the children attending the school. I hear that the Road Board have decided to expend the £IOO granted to the Koru-Plymouth Road-—£so at each end. This is not what was decided by the ratepayers when they went in for a special loan, and I fear the Board will find that the ratepayers will object to pay the rate if the metal is not placed at the upper end of the road, as it was on these terms the vote was taken, The grant from the Government is given £ for £, and sot as a free gift.
