Wahoahui, October 3. , A painful sensation was caused about noon to-day, when George Watts, a carter, aged about 40, was drowned while attempting to rescue a young woman who jumped off the town bridge. Watts jumped off the wharf and swam out some distance, and, seeing a boat going to the assistance of the woman, turned back and sank, ' A sailor named Miller also jumped off the wharf and rescued the woman before she sank, holding her up till the boat reached them. The body of Watts was found three-quarters of an hour afterwards. Attempts wero mado at resuscitation. Restoratives had to be applied to Miller, who was in an exhausted condition. The woman's name is unknown. Latee. It appears the young woman jumped into the river, and that the deceased, who whs working at th 9 whurf, went to the rescue. He was a fine swimmer, but evidently was attacked with oramp. The body was recovered after halfau hour's search, though efforts to re&uwitate proved futile. He leaves a wife and three young children. Two more men went in, one of whom reached the woman and supported her till the boat , arrived. The woman was taken to the | hospital. { Mastebtox, October 3. ' A man, supposed to have come from t Wellington, while riding a bicycle iu j the Park Oval was thrown, and died .ihortly afterwards from rupture of the heart. So far he is unidentified. Later. The man killed by a bicycle accident has b.en.identified as William Kerville, an Auckland gumdigger, who was a native of Baltimore, Dubbo, N.S.W.
